This residence is situated on
land which was formerly part of the estate of Frank Toplin. The estate was
divided into three lots, allowing for the construction of two homes on the
North Park frontage, one of which is the residence at 3083 North Park
Boulevard. This house was designed by Whitely and Whitely International in
1972.
The house shows a strong Frank
Lloyd Wright influence, including such features as the balconies, hipped roof,
low chimney, and the design of the windows. The interior is open with a center
two-story hall which reflects the Prairie School Design. Another feature is the
large stone fireplace which serves as a wall between the living and dining
rooms. The stones were selected and brought in by the owner and his sons.
Parquet floors and fur rugs give a warmth and charm to the first-floor rooms.
The house is skillfully constructed of natural materials to fit comfortably
into a wooded setting. The owners have retained the landscape features of the
Taplin estate and have added a spa as a second garden structure and an
expansive redwood deck which overlooks the deep lawn behind the house.
